Vasili Lights is an Amsterdam-based design studio co-founded by Vasili Popov and Lidiya Koloyarskaya. Since 2015 these two architects have channeled their creativity into interior design objects.
Inspired by the Nordic seaside and the oceans’ many bioluminescent creatures, they create paper craft lampshades in the shape of aquatic animals.
Each lamp is a reflection of their architectural background and is designed with an eye for detail.
Parallel to their design studio, they run their architectural practice. Amongst other projects, they have developed multiple buildings for Stichting AAP, a sanctuary for exotic animals in the Netherlands and Spain.
Vasili Lights' lampshades are papercraft designs, which are fun and easy to assemble at home. Each lamp is delivered as a flat-pack with handy instructions, so you can make each lamp in no time.
Inspired by the sea
Inspired by the roaring seas and its many bioluminescent creatures, the lampshades come in five variations: the turtle, the dolphin, the fish, the octopus, and the jellyfish.
The lamps come in different colors and you can even pick between two different types. The “Lampshade” is made with large cut-outs that show the bulb inside, and the “Lantern” has small perforations that create a soft glow.
Low poly design
Vasili Lights' designs are known as “low poly”, an increasingly popular style that originated in old video games and is highly utilized in the architectural design. The lampshades are made of templates with dozens of polygons: shapes with straight lines and angles such as triangles and quadrilaterals.
Each lampshade is a little architectural wonder: by simply folding and gluing the polygons together, a sheet of paper turns into a three-dimensional lampshade in no time. Place it over an existing light bulb to transform your dining room, office or the kids' room.
The templates are designed and made in Amsterdam and shipped across the world in an A3 envelope that also includes step-by-step instructions. Because assembly is so easy, you can even put it together with your children!
But the best part? The sturdy paper, small-scale production, and flat-pack design make the lampshades a sustainable choice, so actual marine animals are a little safer from plastic waste.
Take your time and enjoy watching the animals come to life in your very own hands. All you need is a stick of glue, a cup of tea, and little patience. The result will be worth your while.
